The History of Public Health DEU F of M

Head department started its studies by 1981 with the assignation of Dr. Sevin Ergin to the unit of “Preventive Physicians and Public Health” under the Microbiology Department of Ege University Faculty of Medicine in a room at Dean’s Building in Bornova Faculty of Izmir. Dr. Zuhal Amato was the first assistant of the department assigned at the same term. With the YOK law coming into force in 1981 it took name of Public Health department, under the branch of Internal Medicine Sciences and Associate Professor. Dr. Sevin Ergin was the first president of the department.  

The first practice area of the department was a health unit belonging to the municipality in Gurcesme and by signing a protocol with the Health Directorate, health staff was recruited there. On 29 October in 1981, Gurcesme Health Center was opened in the remembrance of Ataturk’s 100th birth anniversary. Later, Narlıdere Training Research Health Group Presidency was founded after signing a protocol between Ministry of Health and Izmir Faculty of Medicine and was opened in May, 1982. Although health services were not socialised at that date, they started to be carried out in accompliance with the law related to Socialisation of 224 numbered Health Services in Balcova, Guzeldere and Narlıbahce health centers at Narlıdere Training and Research Region. At the same year the second scholar Dr. Gazanfer Aksakoglu began to work in the department and he handled the presidency post at Narlıdere ERHG.       

After the one partial denial of the protocols regarding Training-Research regions in 2002 by the Ministry of Health (MoH), only Term 6 students training maintains at Konak, Balcova and Narlıdere Health Centres and Society Health Centres.

Since 2005 the presidency post is executed by Prof. Dr. Gul Ergor.

At present 8 instructors, 1 lectorer and 10 assistants are available in our department.
